Good landscape lighting should feel like part of the garden, not something added afterwards.
This work-in-progress concept for a private roof garden shows how Studio Loci considers lighting alongside the wider landscape design. At this stage, it is important to establish and agree the right overall concept before developing the detailed lighting specification.
The aim is to create a warm and inviting space that can be enjoyed throughout the evening, while avoiding excessive lighting and glare. Key elements include:
- Concealed LED lighting beneath the built-in seating and raised planters. This would softly illuminate the deck, define the main seating areas and give the planters a subtle floating appearance.
- Lanterns suspended from the pergola to create a warmer, more intimate atmosphere around the main seating area. Together with the concealed lighting, these would help turn this part of the roof garden into an outdoor room for relaxing and entertaining.
- Subtle LED lighting integrated within the timber screening. This could highlight the natural character and texture of the wood while creating a soft, muted backdrop to the garden.
The concept does not try to light everything. Instead, it uses contrast, shadow and carefully selected points of light to create atmosphere, while reducing glare and unnecessary light spill beyond the roof garden.
At Studio Loci, we see landscape lighting as another layer of the landscape. It should support the planting, materials and layout while giving the garden a distinct character after dark.
