Salt Marsh Inspired Therapeutic Landscape

Studio Loci is excited to be involved in the development of a unique dementia care home on the south coast. The project aims to create a new benchmark for future care environments by placing landscape and wellbeing at the heart of the design.

Rather than adopting a traditional model of tightly arranged apartment style buildings, the scheme is organised as a series of smaller clusters set within a generous landscape setting. This approach helps create a more domestic and legible environment, supporting both orientation and comfort for residents.

The landscape concept draws inspiration from the distinctive local salt marsh landscapes of the south coast. These environments are characterised by soft landforms, layered planting and natural textures, which together create calm, sensory rich spaces. Translating these qualities into the care home setting allows the landscape to become both therapeutic and restorative.

We are currently exploring the relationship between form and function, as well as testing options for the design and engineering of the private outdoor spaces associated with each cluster of buildings. These spaces will provide residents with safe, accessible and meaningful connections to nature.

This project represents an exciting opportunity to rethink how landscape can support health, wellbeing and dignity in later life.
