Studio Loci is the lead landscape architecture practice and landscape designer for the new Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham, Surrey. The therapeutic landscape design provides a contemporary, deconstructed interpretation of the traditional Victorian walled garden.

• Framed and glimpse views that create interest and a sense of discovery.
• Planting beds positioned to provide patients with a full view of the gardens while lying in bed.
• Carefully designed screens that provide privacy without creating an enclosed or institutional character.
• Courtyard gardens directly accessible from patient bedrooms.
• Sensory planting offering seasonal colour, scent, texture and movement.
• Water features offering calming movement and sound, together with tactile and sensory qualities.
• Raised planters and peaceful seating areas.
• Accessible paths connecting the hospice gardens and entrances.
• Retention of mature trees and protected conifers.
• New planting to enhance biodiversity and reinforce the site’s wooded Surrey character.
• Planted screening to soften views of parking, servicing and the new building.

The resulting landscape provides a calm, private and restorative setting where patients can experience meaningful contact with gardens and nature from both inside and outside the hospice.
